Jurgen is an avid birder. He started in 1999 organising birding and herpetological tours in Venezuela and Colombia. As the latter country became safer, he started travelling extensively in the whole country, discovering new birding sites. All information was documented in the guidebook “Birdwatching in Colombia”, which he wrote together with his fellow guide Pablo Florez.
In 2016 he created the reserve.
